What I love most about dancing is, without a doubt, the way it allows me to affect others and be affected by other bodies. The conscious pleasure I take in the tension as I make decisions while at the same time simply observing. Accepting the intangible nature of a moment that will never happen again.
Abel Rojo is a Cuban contemporary dancer and creator with more than 15 years of international experience. A graduate of the Cuban National School of Modern Dance and Folklore (2009), he performed for over thirteen years with Cuba’s leading dance companies, developing a career distinguished by physical precision, versatility, and a powerful stage presence.
He has worked with renowned choreographers including Mats Ek, Ohad Naharin, Itzik Galili, Cecilia Bengolea, Sandra Ramy, and Emanuel Gat, and has performed works by Merce Cunningham. In 2019, he became the first Cuban contemporary dancer nominated for the prestigious Benois de la Danse Award for Best Male Dancer.
Abel also worked as an actor with the celebrated Cuban theatre company El Ciervo Encantado and co-founded the interdisciplinary collective Proyecto Pabellón alongside Cuban artist Edgar Ariel. He was invited by the Beijing Dance Academy as a guest choreographer and served as assistant to Nadav Zelner during the Territorio VIII program.
His artistic practice merges contemporary dance, theater, sound experimentation, capoeira, and installation, creating works that explore identity, memory, migration, and transformation.
